It was protected from the north by mountains.

It had easy access to trade due to water on three sides.

The geography of Rom affect its expansion because it was located in the middle of Mediterranean. It gave Rome a quick access to different locations that were nearby to defeat and conquer the surrounding lands and allowing it to expand.
