How did people feel about the homestead act?

Most United States citizens at the time would have felt indifferently or positively about the act, as it encouraged settlement by offering land to those who would cultivate it and occupy it for five years.

However, Native American peoples were threatened and pushed out of ancestral lands by the act and people who invoked it.
