Why do reptiles have to bask in the sun to warm themselves?

Reptiles are cold blooded, meaning they rely on their environment to provide warmth and cooling to regulate their internal temperatures. Sunlight also gives off ultraviolet light which the reptiles need to metabolize calcium and maintain health.
