Ed Gein was committed to the Central State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Wisconsin after being found not guilty by reason of insanity for the murders of two women. He was later transferred to the Mendota Mental Health Institute, where he remained until his death in 1984. Gein's troubled past and the gruesome nature of his crimes made him a notorious figure in criminal history.
