Although it originally applied to a family of insects (wasps), the term "cryptid" to mean an unclassified animal organism was first used by John E. Wall in a 1983 letter to the International Society of Cryptozoology newsletter. The Word was soon in wide use to mean a mythical or legendary creature that might actually exist in some form.
