Bishops, like popes, are called to be "alter Christus", that is, other Christs. This means, a true Catholic bishop, priest or pope, must lead the flock in all holiness, in imitation of Jesus Christ. In his territory, called a diocese, the bishop rules the flock, and, governs them, that they might be sanctified, and become holy and perfect Christians. He helps the diocese by his good and holy example of living a good and holy life. He administers the churches in his territory and rules over the priests. He punishes bad priests and bad lay people with banishment or excommunication. He helps the poor of his area, and seeks to bring all others to The Catholic Church, outside of which, no one is saved.
