It depends on the gold's purity. Purity is measured either in fineness, as a decimal fraction, or more commonly in karats (at least for jewelry). To figure out the actual amount of pure gold:
> If the fineness is given, multiply the actual weight by the fineness. For example, an ounce of .900 fine gold would actually contain 0.9 ounces of pure gold.
> If the karat purity is given, multiply the actual weight by the karats, then divide by 24. For example, an ounce of 20K gold would contain 0.833 ounces (20/24) of pure gold.
