They are important as research specimens, when comparing and contrasting vertebrates and invertebrates. They are also used for food as well as decorative displays in aquariums. Although they can be found in oceans all over the world, they prefer warmer waters. Small fish and parasites use the urochordates as shelter; the urochordates in turn eat both the fish and the waste products from the fish.
