Why were the colonists and the British unable to compromise and settle their differences?

The british wanted to control everything. They didn't care what the colonists wanted. The colonists on The other hand decided "hey we had this land first, why not make it our own?" This angered the british and caused a war. The countries no longer liked eachother(:
