Thinking in Words is necessary to consider abstract concepts. Most thinking is on the sub-cortical level, where we take in information and act on it without consciously considering what we are doing.

Driving is a good example. That's why it easy to distract a driver with conversation, and especially with phone conversations. Since ALL the information is coming in on the cortical level, we have to pay greater attention to it, and thus our sub-cortical functions suffer. It's as though we use all our processing power to talk and think about the call, and there is none left over for driving.
