The Virginia House of Burgesses was the first elected legislature in the North American colonies, in other Words, it was the first time colonists were allowed, through their elected representatives, to make laws to govern themselves. The laws still had to approved by the Governor's Council and the Royal Governor before they went into effect, however. In the other British colonies at that time, laws were made by a Governor and/or a council appointed by the King or by the person or company to whom the King had granted the land, and the people had no voice in making the laws that governed them.
