Samuel J. Kirkwood (born December 20, 1813 in Harford County, Maryland; died September 1, 1894 in Iowa City, Iowa) succeeded Ralph P. Lowe as the fifth Governor of Iowa, serving between January 11, 1860 and January 14, 1864. Following the end of Kirkwood's term as Governor, William M. Stone (born October 14, 1827 in Jefferson County, New York; died July 8, 1893 in Oklahoma Territory) became the sixth Governor of Iowa, serving between January 14, 1864 and January 16, 1868.
