What was the leading occupation in the 1840's and 1850's?

Farming was the leading occupation during the 1840s and the 1850s, and most Americans still lived and died on farms. Following the Civil War, however, there was a marked exodus of young men from the farms to seek their fortunes in the factories of the cities.
