Fingerprints are unique to an individual, with the possible exception of identical twins. Therefore, they are used to uniquely identify the vast majority of the population for identification papers or for criminal investigations as collecting and analyzing fingerprints requires less technology than other methods such as DNA analysis or retinal scanning.
