Fascist Italy; that is, Italy under the direction of Benito Mussolini, 1922 to 1943. Mussolini very explicitly evoked the memory of the Roman Empire in his attempts to inspire patriotism (and, thus, support for him) in the Italian citizenry.

While there have been repeated comparisons of the recent American dominance to that of the Roman Empire, the United States government was NOT modeled after the Roman Empire. Certain aspects of the US Gov't are influenced by the example of the Roman Republic (in particular, the design of the US Senate).
