Yellowknife got its name from the local Dene First Nations people, who referred to the area as "Somba K'e," which means "where the money is found" in reference to the copper ore found in the area. The name was later anglicized to "Yellowknife" by English speakers. The city of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories of Canada was named after this indigenous term.
