After Reconstruction, the South experienced significant changes compared to its pre-Civil War state. While slavery was abolished and African Americans gained some civil rights, systemic racism and segregation quickly emerged through Jim Crow laws, effectively disenfranchising Black citizens. Economically, the South shifted from a plantation-based economy reliant on slave labor to one that utilized sharecropping and tenant farming, perpetuating poverty. Despite these changes, the social hierarchy largely remained intact, with white supremacy still dominating the region.
