What did Washington do with general gates after their exchange?

After the exchange of General Benedict Arnold for General Horatio Gates, George Washington did not reinstate Gates to a significant command. Instead, he assigned Gates to a less prominent role, partly due to Gates' failure at the Battle of Camden and his diminishing reputation. Washington sought to maintain effective leadership in the Continental Army and preferred to rely on officers he deemed more capable for critical positions.
