What is the role of the Camerlengo?

Beyond that, "camerlengo" is simply the Italian Word for "chamberlain". In the Vatican, there are three chamberlains, with completely different duties. Dan Brown's camerlengo is equivalent to none of these positions, and was made up from nothing for dramatic effect, just like everything else Dan Brown writes about.
