What is a suspenseful story plot?

Suspenseful plots generally employ a combination of uncertainty, urgency and danger to get the reader excited and wanting to hear more. Will the axe murderer kill the innocent girl before she gets to a place of safety? We don't know, but the situation is dangerous and the girl must act fast to save herself. Will the detective solve the mystery before the killer kills again or escapes? Again, we don't know, the situation is dangerous, and the detective must act fast. Will the spy prevent the mastermind from starting a nuclear war? Can the gentleman thief complete the burglary before he is caught? These are all suspenseful plots.
