Romania was not colonized, Romania was the territory of the earliest civilization in Europe.
1. Ancient history: the land, called Dacia (inhabited by the Dacians, a Thracian people), was conquered and colonised by Rome at the turn of the 2nd century AD. The two peoples are our ancestors, plus some Slavic tribes (in a less significant proportion).
2. Parts of our country, before their two-phase unification, were colonised or under a form of other of foreign rule.
Transylvania was in turn conquered by the Hungarians, the Ottomans (Turks) and by the Austrian Empire till after the First World War.
Muntenia (Wallachia) was ruled by the Ottomans till the War of Independence (1877), and the same thing happened with Moldavia. There were also regions stolen (temporarily or permanently) by the Russians. Before, during and after the Second World War the Soviets and the Hungarians sliced off large portions of the country, while the Germans occupied us (with the Power's consent). After the war came the Soviets and they stayed a while (they left in the 50s).
