It increases pressure because you are firing the fuel into the cylinder as the piston is still rising. This starts the "combustion" early, and gives it enough time to burn ALL the fuel fired into the cylinder. The combusion is also pushing on the cylinder as its rising. This is why you do not want to advance it to much.
