Metal alloys are used whenever a pure material does not have the desired characteristics. For example, pure gold is beautiful, but relatively soft and does not keep its shape well. A gold alloy is just as pretty, but is hard enough to resist dents.
Iron is hard, but rusts quickly. Steel, an alloy of iron, carbon and other metals, is harder and more durable.
