What is La Puerta about?

The short story by Jose Antonio Burciaga is an examination of relationships in a small Mexican town, as a man prepares to leave his home to find work in the US. He has been futilely trying to win the lottery because he sees it as a chance to escape from his poor financial state. The door (puerta) in the title is his front door, whose cracked glass he cannot afford to fix.
