The epidermal layer found only in the skin of the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet is called the stratum lucidum. This thin, translucent layer lies between the stratum corneum and the stratum granulosum and provides an additional barrier of protection. The stratum lucidum is composed of dead keratinocytes and helps to reduce friction and shear forces in these high-contact areas. Its presence contributes to the thicker, tougher skin characteristic of palms and soles.
