Probably not, though the culture of ancient Rome was rather different than modern culture. To some extent, the "sexes" were regarded as "dominant" and "submissive" rather than strictly "male" or "female." A commander taking the receptive role in a same-sex couple would have been regarded as effeminate, but there was no (or little) such stigma if he was the "active" partner.
