The first demonstration of television was made by Scotsman John Logie Baird in Sefridges, a department store, in London 1926. His was a mechanical television system with only about 30 lines. See Wiki Entry The BBC transmitted, alternately Bairds 'televisor' system and the new EMI electronic television systems from their transmitter at Alexander Palace London from 1936 until World War 2 broke out. The EMI system triumphed and Baird never really recovered.
