There's a very old story about The Bible. In the Bible there are two stories on how woman was created the first states that woman was made with man from the sil and the secoond says that God put Adam to sleep and made woman from his rib. The inconsistency with these two stories and a brief reference in the book of Mark has led historians to believe that Lilith was the first wife of Adam and that because she did not submit to Adam God kicked her out of the Garden of Eden and her ounishment was to have 100 of her children die a day. Her way of retaliating was to go after the children of Adam and Eve while they were still in the womb or a few weeks after birth. Interestingly enough in many cultures women still put talismans on their children to avoid any harms or evils from reaching their children. I believe that all of this is simply another response of humans to what they can't explain. During the first few weeks after birth, many babies died. Parents of course would not accept that maybe it was something that they did wrong or maybe an environmental factor so they made up a story that has been passed up from generation to generaion.
There is a reference of her in the Egyptian heiiroglyphs as Lilit. For more details on this you can look it up in the Bible. There's also a documentary on it on the History channel: Banned from the Bible: Books ommitted from the New Testament. If you want the story of Lilith herself there's a mini documentary on you tube search Lilith Part 1 of 2 on YouTube.com.
