What does the French rooster represent to the French?

The rooster was chosen to represent France since its etymological root, gallus, also stands for Gaul, the name of the country before it became France.

Not linked to monarchy, it was as a symbol adopted by revolutionaries and late 19th century historians. It also figures on the top of many church belltowers.
