Between the years 1870 and 1920, the major differences on national and state-relevant issues between Republicans and Democrats were several in number. In many ways, the most important of these was the issue of legislative direction of race-relations throughout the Southern states of America: Republicans generally favored the continuation of the Reconstruction 'ideal' while Democrats continually sought to establish White-centric (and, in fact, discriminatory) control of the states in question.
