What does Group A Gazetted officer mean?

Class I or Group A (Gazetted) - Public servants in PB 3 (Rs.15600-39100 with Grade Pay 5400) & above.

Members of all-india-services, though posted to states; State Government Services (selected through Public Service Commissions in States) or promoted public servants/ officers from states to the cadre of Assistant Commissioner or above and to the cadre of All India services; Professors/Associate Professors/Assistant Professors of Central and State Universities; Principal of government-degree-colleges-in-india, http://www.answers.com/topic/patent-examiner(OfficialDesignation-Examiner of Patents and Designs), Additional District Civil surgeons, Assistant Executive Engineers(Selected through UPSC), Executive Engineers and above, District Medical Officer and above, Geologists of geological-survey-of-indiaand Indian Bureau of Mines etc. are Gazetted officers and have the authority to verify and attest documents.

Class II or Group B (Gazetted) - Public servants in supervisory/administrative roles in PB 2 (Rs.9300-34800 with Grade Pay 4200) & above.

Office Superintendents/Section Officers, BDO, tehsildar-1, Junior Doctors in Government hospitals, TDO , Magistrate (SDM) and CO (police department),Income Tax Officer(ITO) etc.

Class II or Group B (Non-Gazetted) - Public servants in limited administrative roles in PB 2 (Rs.9300-34800 with Grade Pay 4200) & below.

Office Assistants, Senior Stenographer, Government School Teachers, Police Assistant Sub-Inspectors/Sub-Inspectors/Inspectors and Foreman(NG) etc. belong to Group B(Non-Gazetted)category of staff.

Class III or Group C - Public servants in non-supervisory/non-administrative roles.

Clerks, Head clerk, Assistants, Typist, Stenographer, Tax Assistant, Telephone operator and Assistant Central Intelligence Officer in Intelligence Bureau under Ministry of Home Affairs come under grade C non-ministerial,non-gazetted posts

Class IV or Group D- Manual workers (skilled or semi-skilled)

Peon, attender, gardener, driver etc.
