Kangaroo young, or joeys, develop outside of the womb. After a short gestation period of about 30 to 40 days, the underdeveloped joey crawls into the mother's pouch, where it continues to grow and develop for several months while nursing and gaining strength. The pouch provides a safe environment for the joey until it is mature enough to venture outside.
