The elements in Family 1 of the Periodic Table, known as alkali metals, are so soft that they can be easily cut with a knife due to their relatively low atomic masses and the metallic bonding that allows layers of atoms to slide over one another. Another common property of these metals is their high reactivity, particularly with water, resulting in the release of hydrogen gas and the formation of alkaline hydroxides. This reactivity increases down the group, with cesium being the most reactive.
