After Henry II of England, who reigned until 1189, his son Richard I, also known as Richard the Lionheart, ascended to the throne. Richard's reign lasted until 1199, during which he became renowned for his military leadership during the Crusades. Following Richard I's death, his brother John became king, ruling from 1199 to 1216, and is often remembered for his conflicts with the nobility and the subsequent signing of the Magna Carta.
