In romeo and Juliet What is the purpose to meet at the church?

Romeo and Juliet meet at the church to secretly marry in Act 2, Scene 6. They believe that by getting married, they can bridge the gap between their feuding families. They hope that the marriage will bring peace and unity, even though it ultimately leads to tragedy.
