When did they stop making video tapes?

The production of VHS tapes largely declined in the early 2000s as digital formats and DVDs became more popular. Major manufacturers officially stopped producing VHS tapes around 2008. However, some niche markets and independent producers continued to make tapes for a while longer, but the format is now largely considered obsolete.
