The Black Hand was a secret Serbian nationalist organization founded in 1911, aiming to promote the unification of South Slavic peoples and oppose Austro-Hungarian rule. Its members sought to assassinate Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, because they viewed him as a symbol of oppression against Serbs and a barrier to their national aspirations. The assassination, carried out on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo, was intended to incite a rebellion and support the cause of Serbian nationalism. This act ultimately contributed to the outbreak of World War I.
