Be unspecific. Don't say anything about where you are or what is going on. Do not be critical. Bear in mind that different types of people were different ranks, Officers (British at least) were virtually all from the upper classes & the noblility. There is nowhere near the access to the media that there is now. Although newspapers were common enough what they actually printed was subject to very heavy censorship. I am not saying what you should or should not write, I am saying it is important to remember what they did or didn't know, they were aware of so much less than we are now. Try to imagine what sort of man is writing the letter. How does he feel ? What concerns him ? what, if anything, can he do or say that will make any difference in his letter ? The chances are that is very, very little indeed. Does it matter where in the world he is from ? When in the war is it written ? What part of the service is he involved in ? Please let me know, if you want to, how it goes on.....
