Recent molecular studies show that there are likely a handful of physalia species, however a new complete global review of the genus will be required to resolve the issue. Currently, the only species recognized by both the US Interagency Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) and World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) is Physalia physalis. However, the majority of recent scientific papers concede that P. utricalus is a distinct species from P. physalis.
