A sunflower does defend itself against other plants who would attempt to steal nutrients, water or light from its soil space. This is call allelopathy, and all plants have it to some degree, but sunflowers are infamous for it. It has been studied at the university level in an attempt to control weeds in a crop using the sunflower's natural toxins (poisons) versus manufactured weed killers.
