Easter now is a Christian celebration of the rise from death of Jesus Christ and his ascention into Heaven.
The Word itself is from the Anglo-Saxon (Old English) Word Eostre, an Anglo-Saxon pagan goddess which is descendant from the Proto-Indo-European Word Ostara meaning "goddess of the dawn". Only English preserves this ancient connection. The vast majority of the languages of the world where the celebration is practiced uses a name related to the Latin Word Pascha which itself is from the ancient Hebrew Word for the Passover.
