Richards Bay was named after Sir Frederick Richards, the Governor of the Cape Colony from 1877 to 1880. The bay was discovered in 1879 by the British naval officer, Captain Francis Richard, during an exploratory voyage. The name was officially adopted to honor Sir Frederick Richards for his contributions to the region. The area later developed into a significant port and industrial center in South Africa.
