Lent is the time of preparation for Easter - the death and resurrection of Jesus. It begins with Ash Wednesday, 40 days before Easter Saturday. The 40 days is a reflection of the time spent by Jesus in the desert, where he was tempted by the devil. Christians observe this by prayer, penitence, almsgiving and self-denial. It helps to remind the believer of the sacrifice on the cross and the joy of the resurrection. Jesus death and resurrection is known as the most important season of the Christian calendar and Lent helps Christians to prepare for this time of the liturgical year. Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims do not eat or drink anything from true dawn until sunset. Fasting is meant to teach the person patience, sacrifice and humility. Ramaḍān is a time to fast for the sake of God, and to offer more prayer than usual. During Ramaḍān, Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. It is about spiritual cleansing. So, the similarly, both seasons are about prayer and self-denial and building a closer relationship with God. They are both about spiritual cleansing. However, Lent helps believers to be cleansed and prepared for Easter - the season which is central to Christian beliefs - and Ramadan is not used for this purpose or any other similar purpose at all.
