Vioxx, also known as rofecoxib, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that was primarily used to relieve pain and inflammation associated with conditions such as Arthritis and acute pain. It works by selectively inhibiting the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme, reducing the production of prostaglandins that cause pain and inflammation. However, Vioxx was withdrawn from the market in 2004 due to concerns about an increased risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes.
