Why does leather float?

Leather floats primarily due to its composition and structure. It contains air pockets trapped within its fibers, which decreases its overall density compared to water. Additionally, the tanning process used to treat leather can further enhance its buoyancy. As a result, these properties allow leather to remain afloat rather than sinking.
