The most expensive diamonds are those that display the most ideal qualities of a natural diamond. These include in descending order:

• colour -- intense fancy colour, especially red
• clarity -- flawless or internally flawless
• carat weight -- given the combination of the two qualities, above, larger stones are more expensive
• cut -- given the three qualities above, this, then can either enhance or destroy the previous three.
