What is the difference between couture and ready to wear clothing?

couture is clothing made specifically for a person usually made BY HAND, that is why it is so expensive. ready to wear is not necessarily low end clothing it simply means that the garment can be purchased off of the shelf, meaning it must sometimes be altered to fit perfectly or can be worn as is.
