In warfare, absolutely yes. Knights were essentially aristocratic soldiers and often ended up in military service to their lord. Death in battle was a real possibility.

If you are referring to the tournaments in the second half of the middle ages, the intent of the events was not to cause death, and typically did not, but accidents were certainly possible and sometimes did occur.
