Why do we need stratification?

Social stratification impacts the access you have to various levels of society. Depending on your place in the social hierarchy you may be either privy to more or less benefits than others. If your place is low, you may be denied resources that could make the difference between life and death, such as access to quality medical care or access to an area that is safe.
