Why most pyramids were built?

Pyramids were mainly built as tombs for pharaohs and other elite members of ancient Egyptian society. They were constructed to house the king's body and belongings for the afterlife, and were believed to facilitate his journey to the realm of the gods. The impressive size and structure of pyramids also served to demonstrate the power and authority of the ruling pharaoh.
